Department BSD IPP - McGuinn Lab About the Department The newly created Institute for Population and Precision Health (IPPH), located in the Biological Sciences Division, will integrate a wide spectrum of factors such as human health behaviors, environmental factors, social and economic factors, policies and genetic determinants of health, into studies focused on the treatment and prevention of disease, as well as the maintenance of wellness. Leveraging and integrating the University of Chicago’s considerable institutional strength in population science with research spanning diverse fields such as genetic medicine, cancer epidemiology, microbiome, and epigenomics, the Institute will have the common goal of improving human health outcomes. Another major goal of the Institute will be to develop a new multidisciplinary training program to equip researchers with emerging tools and methods to conduct precision health research within a population health framework. Our faculty lead research projects in biostatistics, epidemiology and health services research and participate in interdisciplinary teams with faculty in other departments to address complex problems in health and healthcare, in our communities and around the globe. Job Summary The Institute for Population and Precision Health at the University of Chicago seeks a motivated Research Scientist to work on projects related to social and environmental factors affecting mental health and maternal and child health outcomes. The role involves analyzing population health data and electronic health records, using digital technologies and geospatial analyses, and leading independent research projects. Responsibilities span all stages of research including data collection, algorithm development, statistical analysis, manuscript preparation, grant writing, and mentoring students. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate who is passionate about understanding how air pollution and non-chemical risk and resilience (i.e. noise, green space, discrimination, community deprivation) factors impact health outcomes, with a particular focus on health disparities and community engagement. Responsibilities Conduct epidemiologic analyses related to environmental and social determinants of health. Analyze complex geospatial, environmental, and/or digital health datasets to address research questions. Participate in the preparation and writing of grant applications and reports. Co-author and lead scientific research manuscripts. Develop study protocols and conduct advanced data analyses. Present research findings at local, domestic, and international scientific conferences. Work collaboratively with other researchers and contribute to the overall objectives of the research group. Stay updated on new data analysis methods and tools relevant to the research field. Collect and analyze data. Participate in the promotion of a research project. Participate in the preparation and writing of grant applications and reports, and co-author/author scientific research manuscripts. Provide peer review of grant applications and scientific manuscripts. Collaborate on development of new research projects with academic and community-based organizations. May present work at scientific meetings. Perform other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a PhD in a related field. --- Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through less than 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline. --- Certifications: --- Preferred Qualifications Education: Doctoral degree in Epidemiology, Psychology, or related quantitative field. Preferred Competencies Previous experience in research coordination and data analysis is strongly preferred. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present complex data clearly. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research team. Proficiency in statistical software (e.g., R, SAS, etc.) and data management tools. Strong multidisciplinary collaboration skills. Expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), digital health analyses, ecological momentary assessment methodologies, and machine learning is highly desirable. Excellent problem-solving skills and analytic skills. A desire to help others and an interest in public health, especially around health disparities and advancing racial equity.
