Job Title: Community Advocate

Home Office: Vienna, IL

Area of Focus: Community Collaboration

Program(s): SUPS – The Substance Use Prevention Services helps students 11-18 learn about substance use and misuse through a prevention-oriented curriculum and community-wide awareness building activities that aim to reduce the prevalence of substance misuse in our communities.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a human services or related field.

Immediate Supervisor: Prevention Services Coordinator

Hours of Work: Full-time, 40 hours/week

Community Advocate Experience & Credential Requirements: Qualifies as a Mental Health Professional (MHP).

Community Advocate Special Requirements: At least 21 years of age; must complete required registry clearances and criminal fingerprint background checks; after-hours crisis response rotation; Travels to off-site/community based locations for direct service delivery; maintain CPR & First Aid Certification; maintain and provide proof of a valid driver's license and personal vehicle liability insurance.

Community Advocate Skills & Knowledge: Knowledge of various behavioral and human development theories and practices, knowledge of local health and human services resources; Ability to maintain and successfully complete training certification in evidence-based Youth Prevention Education curriculum as required by IDHS – Illinois Department of Human Services; basic crisis intervention and conflict resolution techniques; excellent written and oral communication skills; Excellent computer skills.

Community Advocate Job duties include but not limited to:

  • Teaches interpersonal, communication, drug refusal, and healthy coping skills to students utilizing an evidenced-based and state approved Youth Prevention Education curriculum.
  • Implements and maintains state approved/developed communication campaigns and community wide prevention activities that align with IDHS standards.
  • Assists with the development, maintenance, and distribution of a resource guide of community resources for the designated service area including the regular promotion of “drug-take-back” programs.
  • Provides crisis response and intervention services to clients by utilizing short-term crisis intervention and conflict resolution techniques and referral to appropriate health and human service resources.
  • Assists with conducting the Illinois Youth Survey to schools within the designated service area and assists with the completion of My-Generation Rx program.
  • Regularly and professionally communicates with school personnel within the designated service area, as assigned, to ensure completion of SUPS programming schedule and maintains communication with SUPS Program Manager of adjustments in scheduling.
  • Assists with completion of Youth Prevention Education pre- and post- data collection, grading, and data recording for reporting needs.
  • Completes all required forms and documentation in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Demonstrates active involvement in team/program meetings, supervision, and agency/community events and activities as assigned.
  • Ability to screen, assess and provide interventions for clients that are exhibiting symptoms of trauma.
  • Participates in after-hours crisis response rotation.
  • Other duties as assigned.
